Just a quick update today…am tired from a long, full on day at uni. Have had some good thoughts and read some great stuff in the last few days though. For anyone following my mini ‘The Carbonators’ series, you might have noticed they have began their TV advertising campaign…I can only begin to imagine how much they are spending on this…I am thinking they should maybe change the ad dialouge to:
‘NRMA Insurance Carbonators…we will save the world…but only if you give us money”
I am very surprised I have not had any comments yet along the lines of “but surely them offsetting your emissions is a good thing!” well the answer to that is a little yes and a big NO! I am planning a nice, shit stirring post sharing the facts and my thoughts on carbon offsetting very soon..stay tuned and hod the abuse for then!
Uni today raised some interesting thoughts regarding overpopulation, the developing worlds desire to be like us in the West and the end to humanity that could mark…it is a sad situation. I plan to explore these thoughts a little more very soon…
Finally today…I have stumbled across an utterly fantastic blog, a little similar to mine actually, which is well, well worth the read…have gotten some golden quotes from it such as ‘the Goracle’ (reference to Al Gore and his Climate Change ‘god’ status) and “flourescent light bulbs aren’t a climate policy”…fantastic stuff…
Until next time, take care.
Surely something is better than nothing though. It’s all well-and-good to bag a company if they aren’t doing anything, but one would assume that some action is better than no action.
If the actions of one group causes the general public to “tune-in” to the effects on the environment and research further into ways to minimise the impacts of climate change in their lives, then this can only be seen as a good thing.
Every little bit helps. It may not be the ideal situation in your eyes, but at least it might encourage others to do more.
The problem is though, as stated in one of my other entries (be sure to read all those) that by NRMA offsetting these customers carbon emissions, the customer then as a result thinks they have done their bit and soccer mum can now drive her SUV all she wants with a green conscience…I am not for a minute going to deny that planting tree’s etc. and the service NRMA offers is a good thing on a very small scale, but the larger scale implications of this must be taken into consideration.
Despite the fact they are spending millions of dollars on this, simply to make money out of the green bandwagon..when I see the NRMA offices covered in solar roof tiles, with small scale wind turbines, their company fleet running on biodiesel or hybrids…I might be convinced…
